Our Story
Discover the rich history and dedication behind the Kitimat Flying Club and the Kitimat Airpark. Learn how our passionate volunteers have shaped a vital community asset for Kitimat and beyond.

The Vision Takes Flight
In the 1970s, a few local residents envisioned a recreational aviation hub, leading to the creation of the Kitimat Airpark. Volunteers transformed a rough section of land into a rudimentary grass runway. The Kitimat Flying Club formed in 1976, and by the 1980s, planes were flying in and out. In 1988, the District of Kitimat officially had the airpark recognized as aerodrome CBW2.

Built on Dedication
The Kitimat Flying Club has continuously maintained and improved the airpark, including runway extensions, gravelling (1985), seal coating (1999), and clubhouse construction. Member dues, user agreements, and annual funding, along with countless volunteer hours, have been essential to the airpark's functionality.

Recent Improvements
In 2019 and 2020, the Kitimat Flying Club secured a BC Air Access Program Grant with the help of the District of Kitimat. This resulted in the resurfacing project that took place in July-September 2022, enhancing the airpark's Runway with asphalt. Again in 2024 funding was secured through BC Air Access Program Grant and the District of Kitimat to pave the apron and taxiway.
Our Future
The Kitimat Flying Club in partnership with the District of Kitimat, is applying for a BC Air Access Program grant to develop a comprehensive Master Plan and to obtain key maintenance equipment upgrades and dedicated on-site fueling system to support routine and emergency operations. This grant ask will help improve the safety, year-round reliability, emergency operations and guide future planning for improvements at the Airpark.
As Kitimat grows, strategic planning will strengthen the Airpark’s ability to provide critical emergency capabilities, enhance tourism and support industry stakeholders. The Airpark plays an important role in Kitimat Emergency Operations, Medivac services, the Coast Guard, Search and Rescue, RCMP operations, and BC Wildfire response. Strengthening on-site maintenance and fueling capacity will improve response times and support long-term regional development.
"The Kitimat Airpark is a vital community asset that supports emergency services, general aviation, tourism, and local economic development."
